Obama and Palestine: Predictable disappointment

By Guest Post • Oct 14th, 2009 • Category: Analysis, Israel, Nakba and Right of Return, Newswire, Palestine, Religion, Resistance, War

Democrats are eager to show they are as murderous as Republicans on any issue related to national security, especially during an election campaign. Obama, however, seems sincerely committed to his policy. “The right war, the right time. It is not a war of choice but of necessity.” So goes the rhetoric. What president ever says a war he supports is the wrong war fought at the wrong time and is not necessary? And of course the war in Afghanistan remains a politically cheap way to establish Obama’s national security credentials. How many Americans object to the killing of Muslims, so long as any connection, however tenuous, can be made with terrorism, however ill defined? Given the interconnectedness of political issues, Obama cannot afford to lose any domestic support. Muslims will thus continue to provide the pound of flesh demanded by the Shylocks of national security.

Consolation Prize by Atilio Boron

By Mary Rizzo • Oct 11th, 2009 • Category: Biography, Mary's Choice, Newswire, Opinions and Letters, War

English translation: Machetera
In an unusual decision, the Norwegian Nobel Committee put an end to seven months of searching among the 205 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize and conferred it upon Barack Obama.  The Norwegian committee's decision provoked very mixed international reactions: ranging from stupefaction to huge laughter.  The statement by the organization's president, Thorbjorn Jagland got straight to the [...]

I woke up yesterday morning to find an email from my father, who is on a business trip in Europe at the moment, informing us that my grandmother had a stroke Sunday and passed away.
Unlike my cousins who grew up with her, I'd never known my grandmother. She'd always lived in Iraq and [...]

The following official governmental statistics, up to December 2008, show the disastrous conditions prevalent in Iraq since the American invasion and occupation of that country.

1.      One million widowed Iraqi women (according to Iraqi Ministry of Women Affairs).

Forget the Headlines – Iraqi Freedom Deferred

By Ramzy Baroud • Jul 9th, 2009 • Category: Analysis, Counter-terrorism, No thanks!, Middle East Issues, Newswire, War

WRITTEN BY RAMZY BAROUD

As US combat troops redeployed to the outskirts of Iraqi cities on June 30, well-staged celebrations commenced. The pro-US Iraqi government declared “independence day” as police vehicles roamed the streets of war-weary Iraq in an unpersuasive show of national rejoicing. US mainstream media joined the chorus, as if commemorating the end of an [...]

From Aggression to Victimhood: David Aaronovitch (or How the Mighty Fall)

By Mary Rizzo • Apr 25th, 2009 • Category: Analysis, Counter-terrorism, No thanks!, Gilad Atzmon, Internet and Communication, Israel, Newswire, Religion, Resistance, War, Zionism

WRITTEN BY MARY RIZZO Like anybody, we love to watch false idols crumble, and when rabid Zionist and war advocate Aaronovitch hit the floor with a crash, it was actually one of the most amusing moments in recent political public events. We got to hear, and in some cases, to see the man who considers [...]

Richard Jones – In Praise of Footwear

By Guest Post • Dec 21st, 2008 • Category: Grassroots Activism, Israel, Music, Poetry, Events, Newswire, Resistance, War

Today, Muntazer Al-Zaidi
Put the finishing touches
To the President’s monument,
A memorial to his shame,
For one who yearned for glory
No matter what the cost,
For one who lived
With one foot in his mouth,
Whose mis-speaking spread fear
North, west, east and south,
Whose eyes could never keep still
In their search for someone else to blame,
A man ignorant of the graves he [...]

Remi Kanazi – The Failed Logic of Supporting the Troops

By Remi Kanazi • Dec 16th, 2008 • Category: Analysis, Counter-terrorism, No thanks!, Features, Newswire, Resistance, Somoud: Arab Voices of Resistance, War

In the United States, a growing number of leftists are voicing their opposition to the Israeli occupation. They condemn the demolition of homes, the jailing of Palestinians without charge, and the confiscation of Palestinian land for settlements. They don't support the Israeli troops or their mission, nor do they give a free pass to those [...]

Ramzy Baroud – Cluster Bomb Treaty and the World's Unfinished Business

By Ramzy Baroud • Dec 13th, 2008 • Category: Children's Corner, Counter-terrorism, No thanks!, Israel, Middle East Issues, Newswire, War, Zionism

In the photo: what cluster bombs do to human beings.
The United States, Russia and China are sending a terrible message to the rest of the world by refusing to take part in the historic signing of a treaty that bans the production and use of cluster bombs. In a world that is plagued by war, [...]
