Qais Nawwaf – Roberts Owes Iraqi People an Apology

By Guest Post • Mar 5th, 2010 • Category: Analysis, Counter-terrorism, No thanks!, Human Rights, Newswire, Religion, War

From Dissident Voice
As an Iraqi, I took serious offense to Paul Craig Roberts’ patronizing article, “Muslim Disunity: A Religion Divided Among Itself,” in Counterpunch, March 2, 2010. Roberts audaciously states that the “reason Americans are still in Iraq is because the Iraqis hate each other more than they hate the American invader.” Roberts blames the [...]

Zahir Ebrahim – Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and Justice in the Service of Empire

By Guest Post • Feb 27th, 2010 • Category: Analysis, Counter-terrorism, No thanks!, Human Rights, Newswire

While it is true that most in Pakistan are very upset by what has befallen Dr. Aafia Siddiqui as yet another victim of imperial mobilization – only one among the millions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Pakistan's Tribal-Belt, all along the 'arc of crisis' in the global zone of percolating violence, etc. – the handful who did publicly protest this latest visitation of empire's justice upon a frail tortured woman in a nation of almost 200 million, did so only symbolically. And many an English-enabled 'house Negro' only expressed faith in empire's Justice. The English language Pakistani press is full of their editorials which span the gamut of intellectual servitude from heaping scorn on any public expression of empathy with the victim, to outright blaming the victim. And this combined show of moral bravado despite the fact that Dr. Aafia has become the inextricable symbol of the summation of all the abhorrent injustices purveyed upon women in wars – from rape to rape – and no mere words can ever capture her indescribable agony! Yet, most Pakistanis among the 'field Negroes' daring to express a modicum of moral outrage only displayed our fine moral tenor from the comforts of our living room. Just as we did when Iraqi women were being raped, tortured, and disappeared in the service of empire not too long ago. Then we returned back to our daily grind.

What a charade!
I learned the word "charade " from my Texan English teacher in Teheran long ago.  I later found out she was the wife of a U.S. military advisor for the Shah's puppet regime. I still remember my teacher's meticulous attention to English pronunciation and her glittering diamonds.  Many such U.S. military families [...]

Oslo & the empire – Workers World Editorial

By Guest Post • Dec 19th, 2009 • Category: Counter-terrorism, No thanks!, Features, Hasbara Deconstruction Site, War

It was an historic moment: a Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech that was an apology for an imperialist war of occupation. More than that, it preemptively laid out the justification for U.S. imperialist wars.
Even without hearing the speech, you could measure it by the reactions it evoked. Reactionaries Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin, who have [...]

Joyce Chedia – On Obama's speech in Cairo

By Guest Post • Jun 13th, 2009 • Category: Analysis, Features, Israel, Newswire, Opinions and Letters, Palestine, Religion, Resistance, Somoud: Arab Voices of Resistance, War, Zionism

On June 4 U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama gave a much-heralded speech addressed to the Muslim world in Cairo, Egypt. The commentary below is based on a comment Chediac, a Lebanese-American, made at a June 5 Workers World Forum in New York City.

Obama made a speech. It was called “bold” and “tough on Israel” because [...]

Translated by Toni Solo for http://www.rebelion.org/
On the past March 28th, one could read an article in a national daily newspaper entitled "To the rescue of the Market: the Left". The newspaper considered the protagonists of the rescue to be the progressive leaders of the West, among them Joe Biden, Gordon Brown, Michelle Bachelet and José [...]

Adib Kawar and Rafik Abi Younis: The uprooting conspiracy of Iraqi Christians

By Adib Kawar • Oct 28th, 2008 • Category: Analysis, Features, Israel, Newswire, Palestine, Religion, Resistance, Somoud: Arab Voices of Resistance, War, Zionism

Introduction and translation from Arabic by Adib Kawar

What is taking place in Mosul and other parts of Iraq against the Christian component of the Iraqi people, which is one of its oldest components of the Iraqi society, is not the first crime to be committed by the occupation forces and their strategic ally the Zionist [...]

Rami Khouri: Will Iraq finally end the colonial era?

By Guest Post • Oct 22nd, 2008 • Category: Analysis, Maps, Middle East Issues, Newswire, War

One of the most fascinating developments in the Middle East these days is the attempt by the US and Iraqi governments to negotiate an agreement defining the status of American troops in Iraq, including a target date for all US troops to leave by 2011. A critical issue still being negotiated [...]

Nadia Hasan – "America Don't Worry! Israel is Behind You!"

I remember a few years ago walking through the wonderful narrow streets of the occupied Old city of Jerusalem, seeing a small shop managed by an old Palestinian man who was selling souvenirs to the tourists. I entered the shop, not because I wanted to buy something, I am not a tourist in my own [...]
