Sa'id Barghouti – Palestinian History and Identity in Israeli Schools

By Guest Post • Nov 17th, 2009 • Category: Analysis, Education, Israel, Newswire, Palestine, Religion, Somoud: Arab Voices of Resistance, Zionism

Palestinian students are inculcated with the idea that Jews are the original and oldest inhabitants of the land and the most attached to it. Raising Arab-Palestinian students on this idea, while not providing adequate cultural and historical knowledge to challenge it, encourages alienation from their homeland.

Feelings of alienation will later on undermine the capacity of students to tackle oppressive policies, especially in matters of land and social culture, and transform them into easy prey for the dominant Israeli political discourse which can be summarized as follows: this is the land of the Jewish people. We returned to our rightful historic homeland and built it up. You Arab-Palestinians are just passers-by, strangers to this land, and a source of annoyance to our presence. This is the discourse underlying Israeli political demands for the recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.

No Emergency Summits for Arab Human Development Crisis

By Ramzy Baroud • Nov 4th, 2009 • Category: Culture and Heritage, Education, Middle East Issues, Newswire, Palestine

WRITTEN BY Ramzy Baroud
When the first Arab Human Development Report (AHDR) was published in 2002, a star glistened in a vast, gloomy sky. The fact that a UN-sponsored report, authored by independent Arab scholars would receive so much attention in Arab media, was in itself a promising start. The fact that such terminology as human [...]

"The Good Ones" who act very, very bad

By Mary Rizzo • Aug 13th, 2009 • Category: Education, Hasbara Deconstruction Site, Israel, Newswire, Palestine, Religion, War, Zionism

Being an apologist is different from apologising. Given the major loss of human life, including many unarmed and unthreatening men, women and children, just like those in the picture raising the white flag and later shot at, it has become almost ridiculous for Israelis to insist that their army has anything remotely resembling morals, but this [...]

خالد العمايرة – أعيدو المعلمين المفصولين إلى وظائفهم فورا

By Khalid Amayreh • Oct 25th, 2008 • Category: Education, Features, Khalid Amayreh, Newswire, Palestine, Somoud: Arab Voices of Resistance

Hadeel Abu Kwaik is one of 7 students whose Fulbright scholarships were recently withdrawn, then swiftly reinstated by the US State Dept. But almost 700 other students remain stranded in Gaza

Few days ago, on 1 June, Hadeel Abu Kwaik was sitting in her computer lab at Al-Azhar University in Gaza looking worried, and perplexed. Today, [...]

URGENT APPEAL TO ALL ACADEMICS: CONDEMN U.S. GOVERNMENT COMPLICITY IN BLOCKING PALESTINIAN RIGHT TO MOVEMENT AND ADVOCATE MEASURES TO PRESSURE ISRAEL

By Haitham Sabbah • May 31st, 2008 • Category: Action Alert, Education, Newswire, Palestine

The news that the US State Department has decided to cancel all previously approved Fulbright grants to Palestinian students in Gaza is deeply shocking. In yet another clear demonstration of US complicity with the Israeli occupation regime, the State Department has decided to withdraw the grants for graduate studies in the US because Israel has [...]
