Hi Lafayette, love your comment!
"it certainly sounds like something to be against" indeed!

But i think it goes far far deeper than the smoke and mirrors stuff so that the public is distracted. It has virtually created "a feel good" approach that is spelled out in the way people are judging the validity of a programme, a party, a system, and it turns policing into a really positive thing, as well as CCTV, tracking everyone everywhere and making them feel that they are part of a "community" that "cares about them" so much that it will protect them against their "common" enemy.

This is at the root of supremacist, racist, exclusionist and exclusivist thinking and it certainly is the philosophy behind all the protected communities we see in the world. Protecting them against those who are going to fight for their rights.

There is a lot to say here about things, but I will be giving more and more info on Etzioni, courtesy Niki, who is the top researcher in this. There is a mess that we have to be able to see so we can stop it.

Very interesting. The last I thought about communitarianism was in the early days of the first Blair government, when the word was thrown in along with other vague feel-good catch-phrases like 'the Third Way' . I think Will Hutton ('the State We're In' and other books) of the once-'liberal' Observer Sunday newspaper, who seemed to see himself as a guide or mentor to the novice Blair in his early days, espoused the creed at some point; and maybe also (though I couldn't swear to it) another of Blair's 'influences', the mindblowingly turgid sociologist/political-philosopher Anthony Giddens (author of 'the Third Way') - I know I am not alone, and I've a feeling Blair is one of us, in not being able to read enough of Giddens drivel to really be sure what he espouses. Anyway I certainly remember Etzion being brought to my attention., because I remember trying to find his book in my library back then - I forgot about it, so apparently did Blair and Hutton, and I thought everyone else had. Just goes to show.

But really, is this any big deal? Is it not just another 'tactic'. It's no secret that the rich's right-wing foundations fund think-tanks and sponsor academics to creatively come up with ideas, philosophies, catch-phrases, schemes - anything to muddy the waters, discredit class politics, divide and rule. Some catch on, like identity politics, feminism, 'yes we can'... hundreds of others pop up and then disappear back into obscurity again. I'd assumed that Communitarianism was just another of these 'fleeting notions'. It certainly sounds like something worth being against; but surely giving it too much attention is just another way of distracting from the bigger strategy of which it is just an ephemeral tactic - the class-war being waged by the rich against us all.

what a trip... while some might subscribe wholeheartedly, maybe communitarianism is just a resilient intellectual justification for modern aristocracies/oligarchies.
