Dr Hisham Bustani has refreshed my rusty brain that once studied social Anthropology at the University of Oxford, decades and decades ago, but today I only find Brookes College named rather than the Institute of Social Anthropology at the main university of Oxford taking part in the recent forthcoming Event in London on 9th July 2009. Strange!

Apart from this personal egoistic interest, the whole article is admirable.

Good analysis.
I agree on it in many points.
But I tend to make it simpler.
I read recently an article of an Israeli journalist who compared the separation fence in Palestine with the separation fence with Mexico and the restrictive immigration policies of US.
He said that all western countries, as Israel, would have to build separation fences because of the excessive difference of economic welfare between the peoples on the different sides of the wall, and they would go down naturally when the difference will be less than a certain threshold.
But, as you well know, the difference of welfare is due to military domination; this fact is blatantly clear in Palestine; but the colonialism was based on the same mechanisms; so it is today's imperialism or "war on terror" or on "rogue states".
But lower classes in western countries still have a mich higher welfare than the one of their counterparts in "third world" countries, or at least they think so.
Thus they see the immigration from third world countries as their bitter enemy, and they vote more and more for the right; the latest EU elections are a blatant warning of this trend, which will increase in the future.
Until the western left, or liberals democrats will be uncapable to go beyond outdated marxist or classic liberal schemes and uncapabale to show that the militarization is a danger also for western average people, and won't begin to make understand that the immigration is linked to the demographic bomb, and that the demographic bomb is linked not to ignorance, but to the lack of welfare in third world countries, specially health care, retirement security and work security, the evolution of the left would be the one of a archelogic remnant; it will survive every day reduced by the action of time, or as Iranians say, it would be erased by the pages of time...

Left in the Europe is indeed a pathetic concept. Actually it is not even a concept, just mode of speech.
