Interesting thoughts which provoke in me the following thought:
While Hamas claims 'out loud' (if the writing in it's charter can be defined as 'out loud') that it wishes to kill Jews, the IDF actually kills Palestinians and terrorises them on a daily basis. Interesting comparison, no?

What is nasty is that it kills and tortures Palestinians who disagree with Hams. An organization democratically elected to power is bound to become dictatorial, because it thinks and operates as if it is the one that has all answers. If it can claim out loud that it wants to kill all Jews and be the key factor in establishing a Moslem Empire from Indonesia to Nigeria, what should the Palestinians who do not want to be part of such an empire expect?

Well, calling Hamas 'nasty' is expressing an opinion, not a fact, so it is not really correct to call it 'innacurate'. Everything you write is true in my opinion, and from what Gerald Kaufman said in his speech, I doubt he would disagree with you. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean he is 'wrong' in his assessment of Hamas as 'nasty' since that is a personal feeling – even if I think the zionist state is at least as 'nasty' as Hams. That of course is my own personal feeling!

I agree with you Adib. You are right to point out the problems with Kaufman's speech. The significance of it, however, is the degree to which he has moved, and the shock waves this must be sending through the Jewish community here. I think one also has to take one's hat off to him for his courage in speaking out so openly, even if some of his old prejudices still show through. It has taken me a long time to get to where I am on Palestine, and I still keep on discovering unchallenged assumptions in myself.

I appreciate Sir Gerald's words although I don't agree with his description of Hamas. But he puts everything well and into perspective. I believe Israel has completely lost their propaganda war. They should panic-it's the old "emporer has no clothes" story and once exposed there is no regaining the veil of "victim" they have so successfully exploited for so long.
I suppose Kaufmann will be written off as a "self-hating Jew".
