As an Americanist and a Palestinian  intellectual who is not affiliated to any political party in Palestine, I feel that I have to stand up and speak out. I have to speak about the faulty policy which feeds the spirit of hatred and resentment. Almost every man, woman and child in the world knows that the American policy in the Middle East during  the two terms of Bush's  Administration is distinguished by being biased and double standards.  Very few, however, are easily deceived by the glittering rhetoric made by some American politicians, particularly, the most articulate outgoing Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice! Dr. Rice was very smart when she declared at the outset of the most brutal Israeli war on Gaza that it was the Palestinian side which is held responsible for violating the six-month  truce. She was even smarter when she concluded her career by signing an MOU, which is completely in favor of the Israelis. It is an MOU which further tightens the siege on Gaza and allows Israel to posses more American WMD to kill more Palestinians.

The most disturbing statement about the situation in Gaza was made by Dr. Rice was when she declared that it was the Palestinian side who violated the truce and subsequently is responsible for what is happening in Gaza. Such a statement is easy to be made by Dr. Rice whose accomplishments in America's foreign policy were spectacular!

She promised that by 2008 the president's vision of two states would be concretized. It seems though that she succeeded in having two Palestinian cantons, one in Gaza, and the other in the West Bank! Sowe can easily say that Dr. Rice succeeded in fulfilling her President's vicious vision of having two viable Palestinian states.

Perhaps Dr. Rice was the most frequent visitor to the Middle East when compared with her predecessors.  The normal expectation has been that Dr. Rice would have a deeper understanding of the Middle East crisis in general, and the Palestinian side in particular.  As Palestinians living in Gaza, we expected Dr. Rice to have done some research about the demography of Gaza. We also expected here to have done some investigations about the psyche of the true victims living in Gaza. We are not sure if Dr. Rice knows that more than seventy percent of the Palestinians living in Gaza  are Palestinian refugees who had been kicked out of their towns and villages in Palestine. We are not certain if Dr. Rice knows that most of the Israelis who replaced the displaced Palestinians had come from far off lands, from diverse countries to establish a state on the land of other people. It seems that Dr. Rice is very happy to see the Palestinians suffer under siege; she wants them to sing for peace in a big cage called Gaza, and if they protest by sending home made or ineffective Chinese rockets, she will hold them responsible for the mess!

The most recent MOU signed by Dr. Rice and Ms. Livni, one of the most notorious Israeli war criminals, stipulates that the American government helps in preventing weapons smuggling into Gaza. According to Dr. Rice, the signing of this MOU is only a step in the process towards a permanent ceasefire. Of course she speaks about a process which gives the Israelis more time for human ethnic cleansing in Gaza; she wants to give the Israeli army more time to kill more Palestinian children and women. However,  unfortunately this MOU does not stipulate that the American government stops sending weapons of mass destruction to Israel. The MOU does not speak about the most sophisticated weapons the American government is giving for free to Israel to kill Palestinian children and women in Gaza. The MOU does not talk about any practical procedure to ban Israel from using DIME and White Phosphorus bombs that kill Palestinian children by burning
their little and tender bodies.
The MOU has ignored the fact that the Palestinians living in Gaza are occupied ; they are not terrorist as promulgated by the colonial rhetoric; they are freedom fighters who want their legitimate rights, they are people who want to live in dignity like all the peoples of the world. The MOU has never included anything related to lifting the siege imposed in Gaza by opening crossings for humanitarian purposes. The Palestinians in Gaza do not bank much on the American government but rather on the good American people, the good people who do not want to see the taxes they pay used in building the Israeli arsenal of mass destruction which is used to threaten the Arab people, in general, and the Palestinian people in particular.

Indeed Bush's administration has left the soon coming Obama's administration with a heavy legacy; a legacy of anger and resentment against the biased American government which does not represent the American voice which calls for freedom, independence and dignity. It is a heavy burden Obama's administration should waive. We hope, though that Obama's administration follows a different policy, a policy which is based on objectivity and transparency. We hope that Ms. Clinton, Condi's successor, would be the one who would improve the image of America in the Middle East and the Islamic world. We are sure that Ms. Clinton would be more objective and realistic when she deals with the Palestinian Issue. We hope that the Administration would follow policy which balances between the nationalistic aspirations of the Palestinians and the divine dream of the Jews, those who totally disagree with the  massacres committed by the Israeli army against the innocent Palestinians in Gaza.

  1. The war criminals of Tel-Aviv and Washington were racing against time to kill the maximum numbers of Palestinians in Gaza before Bush departs the White House for good. The MOU did leave a window of opportunity to continue the killings and murders. The issue I have does Ramallah and Cairo understands this? I suggest the Palestinians together with international organizations establish a “special unit” made of lawyers and investigators to track all the criminals responsible for Gaza, not only the Israeli leadership but the soldiers who did the killings as well. The Jews established the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Vienna to track all of the Nazis including guards at prison camps. Why can’t we do the same and establish a Palestine Documentation Center? That is something I had in mind many years ago.

  2. The author calls the West Bank and Gaza "cantons". I think more accurate names are "bantustan" (like in South Africa) or "reservation" (where US white invaders put the original native Indian inhabitants). These terms better describe the Palestinian situation. "Canton" is an Israeli propagandist terminology suggesting a Swiss-like situation of several federated local governments enjoying freedom and participating in the state government. The problem is that terminology must be immediately clear to everyone and mustn't sound like old fashion Soviet propaganda otherwise people would ignore everything you say.

  3. If Israel really wanted to kill women and children, i think you wouldnt be counting 1300 dead in Gaza, but 1,300,000. You yourself talk about all the powerful and soffisticated weapons that Israel is receiving from the US. During their 3 week offensive they could've erased all living form in the Gaza strip. And yet, there are only 1300 or so dead. Most of them are Hamas militants belonging to the terrorist organization and shelling peaceful citizens of Israel (women and children) with rockets – some homemade and some not, but nonetheless rockets that are meant to kill, injure and inflict damage on the peaceful population – women and children (as you mentioned so many times in yout article). Some of the palestinian victims are actually innocent, but what can you do when Hamas is cowardly hiding behind those women and children stating that they actually dont care about their own population and any means of fighting zionism is justified?
The US is granting and selling weapons to israel and wants to prevent smuggling of weapons to Gaza because Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East while Gaza is run by a terrorist organization. Too much of a democracy I think – allowing members of its Government to support enemy and to oppose the state's very existance. Not much of an opressor.
If you say that all the people of Gaza are so innocent, let them (and you in particular) speak up and atand up against Hamas, who is the real problem and real source of the destruction in Gaza. Hamas is the one to blame for waging a war, not Israel. Israel is stronger and Israel ofcourse will win over a small group of terrorists, but that doesnt make Israel the bad guy – not always the bigger and stronger one is the bad fellow.
Regarding the right of a Jewish state being established on the territory of Palestine – your argument is frivolous at best. Israel can say the same about arabs living in the Jewish land. Jews were thrown out of their land thousands of years ago and were scattered around the World. Finally they want to return to their native land. How do you draw a line between 50 years and 2000? If we start digging up history, the World War 3 will be around the corner.

  4. For this Time, no endless way of justice cases, and expensif inprisonment (For all the Jewcriminals} But as they wish….An eye for an eye… By this way also a collectif punishment and Justice.. thank you for the explanation of canton Most Palestinian and Arab analysts use the term canton in their discussion (in Arabic , on tv . Indeed the term Bantoustan sounds more accurate .

JAMES you are watching the wrong channels . IF you saw the tv for the whole 22 days like we did , you would not say the majority were hamas members . Only 48 hamas fighters died , the rest were all Civilians and we have seen them on tv , from the tiny babies to the toddlers and there were many of them , to the women , and teens and elderly . your TV channels lie to you unfortunately , I dare them to show you the truth . but they are controlled by zionist friends and they only show you what does not hurt Israel . shame on you for saying the majority were hamas , you sound naive since many westerners in Britain have access to Press tv and Al Jazeera in English and saw the civilians being taken every minute in cabs , in civilian cars , on hands , on carts with donkey , they were very much civilians . Blame your dishonest media . time to recover from the Occupation of America by israel friends , time to free your Press and media from their claws

  6. it is true that israel cld have easily slaughtered even 100td gazans. the qusetion arises, why haven't IOF killed more? is it because US put a limit on the killings? but not because Israel didn't want to kill more gazans?
nevertheless, the latest Israeli tactical win has also earned Israel more hatred and condemnation. thnx
