I Am So Blessed

I am so blessed
Being a Palestinian
Being a refugee
For over fifty years
I am so blessed
I wasn’t in the tank
With an army uniform
Killing and destroying
To frighten people away
“It was a barren land”
Later on to say!
I am so blessed

Being under curfew
For most of my life
I am so blessed
I wasn’t with the army
Erecting high walls
Shooting at civilians
At every check-point
I am so blessed

Losing my father
In one of their raids
I am so blessed
That it was not I
Flying planes of terror
Firing that missile
Then Laughing and rejoicing
The mission was a success
I am so blessed

Watching my brother
Being taken away
I am so blessed
I wasn’t one of those
Kicking till he bled
From his nose and head
I am so blessed

Burying my baby
With a bullet in her heart
I am so blessed
I wasn’t that soldier
Who took a baby’s life
Nor was I his mother
Who welcomed him a hero
When coming back home
I am so blessed

Sleeping in a UN tent
Shivering in the freezing cold
I am so blessed
I wasn't that settler
Who occupied my home
Justifying massacres
With a "PROMISE SO DIVINE"
Then, tossing and turning
All night long
Wondering what's wrong
Haunted by his deeds
Searching like mad
For a long lost peace
Which he can't find
I am so blessed

Holding David’s stone
In my little hand
I am so blessed
I wasn’t giant Goliath
With mass-destruction might
Seeing himself invincible
With no hope in sight
I am so blessed

Umka, I stand corrected, I know most Palestinians were expelled in 47-48 and fled to Gaza. I almost wrote 60 but then decided to focus on the author's focus on the Occupation (which Israelis consider to only be of the 67 areas).

Mary, excellent deconstruction . . . one correction

"and that is after 40 years of your expulsion of them from their lands"; most of the population of Gaza were expelled from ethnically cleansed and destroyed villages, not forty, but sixty years ago; on their remains and village land now sit Ashdod, Ashkelon, Sderot, the places to which American politicians make pilgrimage.

I fixed it Miguel, thanks! Gilad, I like your title very much, you have a talent!
Fiona, thanks very much for your comment, and you are right, if this were written by an Arab, it would be attacked so horribly! In fact, Fiona, my very first thought was to simply "rewrite it as an Arabic Dad". Just change the things that would make it clear what the references were, but then changed my mind. It is something I might actually try.

I would like to add the comments that my dear friend Adib added to the article when he sent it out to his mailing list:

A.S.K. adds with the permission of our good friend Mary who wouldn’t allow herself to be a part of the Zionist evil: How many of the more than 500 slaughtered Gazans and about 2500 wounded in just a week’s time by your most humanitarian Zionist army’s F-16s and Apaches given as a gift by your great ally the “biggest democracy in the world” are nothing but civilians?! You the retired imported soldier and who is proud that his son is becoming fully Israelied by killing so many infants in their beds, don’t worry your dear son in his mudded fatigue even in the shelter of his mighty tanks shall not be able to kill more babies because it is easier to ambush and blow them up than the F-16s flying at a height of 30,000 ft. The terrible mistake of you Zionists is allowing yourself to be convinced that Palestine is yours. Palestine was Arab thousands of years even before the first Hebraic invasion took place when Moses (if he ever existed) told them this is your promised land and you are the chosen people. A God’s chosen people can’t be thieves, especially that God is too good to allow and body to steal any body’s else’s land and property, and all his peoples are his, no chosing. Go back home and save your soul and other people’s souls.

Dad: For the past eight years, Israel has fought a single war with shifting fronts, moving from suicide bombings in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to Katyusha attacks on Israeli towns near the Lebanon border to Qassam missiles on Israeli towns near the Gaza border. That war has targeted civilians, turning the home front into the actual front. And it has transformed the nature of the conflict from a nationalist struggle over Palestinian statehood to a holy war against Jewish statehood. Except for a left-wing fringe, most Israelis recognize the conflict in Gaza as part of a larger war that has been declared against our being and that we must fight.

ASK :This no friend of humanity and God, he is joking!!!! Who is occupying the land of whom!? It is high time to understand that this land is not yours, and Arabs shall not let you go safe when in their land. You even refused to accept to share with them their own land… So your dark fate was created by you, thus don’t blame others for it, take your son back to your European homeland, it is safer for you there, as where you are in now is and shall continue to be the MOST dangerous for you Zionists.

DAD: But how? Even some right-wingers are saying that we should have declared a unilateral cease-fire after the initial airstrike and then dared Hamas to continue shelling our towns, rather than risk another quagmire. And even some left-wingers are saying that we should now destroy the Hamas regime and then offer to turn Gaza over to international control or, if possible, an inter-Arab force led by Egypt. Every option is potentially disastrous. Most Israelis agree on two points: that we cannot live with a jihadist statelet on our border, and that we cannot become occupiers of Gaza again.

ASK: We repeat go back to you European homeland this place shall never be safe for you as long as you are a Zionist. Destroy Hamas or any other Palestinian is impossible, Palestinians prove that your hero leader, David Ben Gurion, was dam wrong, the new Palestinian generation did not forget, they know our rights in Palestine than us the old generation and they shall continue to fight to liberate it from criminal Zionism.

DAD: The despair of Gaza is contagious. One friend, a Likud supporter, said to me, "I don't know what to hope for anymore."

ASK: Nothing… nothing at all he and you should know that you Zionist has no hope in our land. It is good news even a Likudnik lost hope, God is great..

DAD: Meanwhile, I try to reassure myself about Gavriel's safety. Growing up in Jerusalem during the suicide bombings in the early 2000s, he has already known danger, intimacy with death. A 13-year-old acquaintance was stoned to death, and was so mutilated that he could be identified only by his DNA. A friend lost the use of an eye in a bus bombing on his way to school. At least now, Gavriel and his friends can defend themselves. Perhaps one reason most of them volunteered for combat units was because now the generation of the suicide bombings can finally fight back.

ASK: Do you still remember that 23 years old humanitarian American called Rachel who was smashed and flattened by that criminal Zionist driving a bulldozer, because she was trying to stop him from demolishing the house of a Gazan physician?! Zionism has nothing to do with humanity…

By the way you deafened us with your holocaust, you are trying to avenge not against the Nazi by creating an unending holocaust against us Palestinian in our own homeland.

DAD: Just before the conflict in Gaza began, I happened to visit Gavriel at his base. His unit's barracks had been turned into what young Israelis call a "zula" — a hangout. There were muddy couches, chairs without backs, a darbuka drum, a TV (Jay Leno was on). It could have been a teenage scene anywhere in the West,
except that hanging on the walls were Hamas banners captured by the unit's veteran members in a previous round of fighting in Gaza. In a corner of the room hung a photograph of a fallen soldier. Across the bottom someone had written, "What was the rush, Shachar? Why did you have to leave us so soon?"

ASK: Shachar? Left to see the thousands of Palestinian victims including many suckling babies not to mention some unborn embryos killed by him and his imported comrades… Shachar? Is happy where he is because he doesn’t have to burden his conscious by fulfill his superiors’ orders to kill and kill and kill… They told him that Palestinian blood is worthleth!!!

DAD: Even now, perhaps especially now, I feel that our family is privileged to belong to the Israeli story. Gavriel, grandson of a Holocaust survivor, is part of an army defending the Jewish people in its land. This is one of those moments when our old ideals are tested anew and found to be still vital. That provides some comfort as Sarah and I wait for the next text message.

ASK: Why don’t you let your Gavriel avenge his grandfather back in Germany?

Well done. As someone who was raised on the Spartan Jew battle cry of "Never Again!" and who then, at a point in my life started to question: "For who never again? Just Jews?", you have my cynicism and disgust for Jewish victimhood down to a tea. I could just imagine the outcries of "Terrorist" if this article had been written by an Arab.
