<description>That&#039;s a fair point Neta, interestingly enough I had a sympathetic reply today from one of the emails I sent regarding this. I&#039;m turning very GREEN of late:

Thank you for your recent email about proposals to upgrade the EU’s relationship with Israel. As a committed campaigner against the occupation of Palestine and the ongoing human rights violations perpetrated by the Israeli authorities, Caroline is very strongly opposed to this move. She has consistently argued that Israel is already in breach of the EU-Israel Trade Association and that this should be suspended. You can read her correspondence with the European Commission and the British government about this at http://www.carolinelucasmep.org.uk/2008/01/23/letters-about-palestine-and-the-middle-east/

So, whilst the blockade of Gaza and, in one European Commissioner’s words, the ‘collective punishment’ of Palestinians continues, Caroline does not believe the time is right to be forging closer links with Israel.

Those supportive of the move claim that human rights concerns can best be addressed through a constructive relationship with the Israeli government. However, experience over recent years has not seen such expectations realised and Israel has shown little respect for existing agreements that require it to comply with international law. Caroline has, therefore, urgently emailed Foreign Secretary David Miliband about the proposals and called on him to oppose any upgrade of the EU-Israel relationship during this week’s Council of Europe meeting.
Thank you for taking the time to raise this with Caroline and for your support.
Kind regards,
Cath.
